SUMMONS
SPECIAL COMMUNICATION
To be held in WELLINGTON
On 21st May 2010

NOTE: A Summons was sent to each Lodge Secretary on 26 March 2010.
You can download a copy of the Summons at the bottom of this page.

Below is the opening letter of the Summons:

Brethren:

As Grand Master I hereby summon a Special Communication under Rule 196 of the Book of Constitution and this memo and associated papers are the official Summons documents as required by Rule 196(c). Enclosed you will find the agenda papers, remits, and material for this Special Communication which is to be held in Wellington on Friday, 21 May 2010. The Special Business to be conducted is detailed in the attached agenda and the accompanying Remit documentation and in accordance with Rule 196(d) no other business shall be conducted at this Communication.

Grand Lodge in Communication is the supreme governing body of Freemasonry, so it presents an opportunity for you and your Lodge to have a part in the future direction of the Craft.

As your Grand Master I will preside over the proceedings and ensure the rules of procedure are adhered to. The Remits will be open for discussion and debate.

The attached Remits have a brief explanatory note attached, but, of necessity, this cannot be all encompassing. The arguments for and against are not detailed exhaustively, and brethren may well have other perspectives which they may wish to raise at Communication.

It is important that the proposed remits are discussed within your Lodge, however your delegates are urged not to form a final view until the discussion and debate in Communication has occurred. While your Lodge may well have a particular opinion on a Remit, often it is not until listening to the arguments for and against that the full ramifications of the Remit are recognised and a final considered view can be reached.

Don’t be blinkered, but come with an open mind – listen to the debates and then, mindful always of your Lodge's comments, form your decision.

Likewise, if there is a Remit on the agenda which you (or your Lodge) have an interest in, the Communication is the forum to express that view so other delegates can be informed, so they too will benefit in reaching their conclusion.

I look forward to seeing you in Wellington in May for this Special Communication.

S C Barker
Grand Master
