Registered Charitable Entity CC46016

CHARITIES COMMISSION REGISTRATION - an update

It has been widely reported in the media that Freemasonry has lost its Tax Exempt status which meant it was not a charity.

Although The Grand Lodge of Antient Free and Accepted Masons of New Zealand lost its appeal to the High Court challenging the Charities Commission's refusal to register the organisation as one single entity.

In making his judgement the presiding High court Judge clearly stated in Clause 15 of his opinion

" Everyone accepts that the assets and expenditure of the Fund of Benevolence fall within charitable purposes. It does not need further consideration. ..."

There are some formalities to be observed but The Freemasons Charity is assured of registration- it will continue its tradition of caring and the following has been compiled to correct any misconceptions that may have been created by the media-

BUSINESS AS USUAL FOR THE FREEMASONS CHARITY.

Question:         Is it true that The Freemasons Charity has lost its charitable

                       status?

Answer:          No- the decision denies registration to Freemasons New Zealand

as one entity but that decision also stated quite clearly that

The Freemasons Charity was assured of registration.

Question:        But won't that change the way it operates?

Answer:         Not at all- for The Freemasons Charity it is very definitely business

                      as usual.

Question:        Does The Freemasons Charity need my donations?

Answer:         Yes it does, the continuing success of the work done by The

Freemasons Charity is dependent on the donations it receives

                      from brethren.

Question:         Is my donation to the Freemasons Charity still Tax Deductible?

Answer:           Yes

Question:         Is there funding available for those in need in the community?

Answer:           Yes, if you know of a case in need simply approach your

Benevolence Officer or your lodge Almoner they can assist with

                         the application.
