A Great Career in the Making
A GREAT CAREER IN THE MAKING
Gemma New, Freemasons Scholar in 2009, scooped one of just four places in the Masters of Orchestral Conducting course at the Peabody Conservatorium of Music (part of John Hopkins University) in Baltimore.
A draw card to her making the application was a chance to study under conducting teacher Gustave Meier.
Gemma’s break came as she played violin with the NZSO National Youth Orchestra in July. A visiting French Canadian conductor Jacques Lacombe invited her to conduct the orchestra during his dress rehearsals in all the New Zealand centres on the tour. It was he who advised her to apply to the Peabody Conservatorium and supported her application.
Wellington born Gemma went to Samuel Marsden Collegiate School in Karori where she had the opportunity to specialise in music. On leaving school she completed an honours degree in violin performance at Canterbury University and in that time became assistant conductor at the Christchurch Youth Orchestra.
Now studying in Baltimore Gemma has begun to pursue her ultimate dream of becoming an orchestral conductor of international standing, with the opportunity to return to New Zealand with fresh experience and honed skills to lead New Zealand orchestras.
Good luck Gemma, as a Freemasons Alumnus we look forward to following your career
